Some questions are too intense and emotionally-charged for the average car-loving person to even consider. The following may be one of them. We recommend that the faint-of-heart stop reading now, before they are exposed to an unthinkable query that may be impossible to answer:
Which classic Dodge comes out on top: the Charger or the Challenger? Yes, we really went there. Before you panic and throw out an answer, let’s delve deeper into what makes each of these classic vehicles a masterpiece in its own right.
Dodge Charger R/T
First up is the classic Dodge Charger, which has had an imposing, sinister look since it was revamped and redesigned in 1968. The newer, “badder” Dodge Charger still retained its classic appeal and thunderous power, but it added a lot of style with its seductive, curvy design. (Are you picturing your favorite Hot Wheels General Lee yet?) As the old saying goes, looks aren’t everything. Luckily, the classic Charger had a lot more than looks going for it. Buyers were faced with the insanely difficult decision of choosing from a variety of powerful engines, including the 440 Six Pack Magnum and the 426 Hemi. The Hemi was equipped to pull 433.5 horses and blew a heavily-modified Mustang out of the park during a test drive by the incredibly talented Max Balchowsky (the guy who maintained and modified all the Bullitt vehicles). Here’s a napkin to wipe up your drool.
Dodge Challenger R/T
Just as its name suggests, the classic Dodge Challenger looks like it is always up for a fight (and we wouldn’t bet on the other guy). Conceived in 1970, the nimble and intimidating Challenger boasted the same engine choices as the Charger (most notably the 440 Six Pack Magnum and the 426 Hemi), but with a lighter body that could reach zero-to-60 speeds in around six seconds. The quick and agile Challenger showed the world that it was a force to be reckoned with, and it did so with style. It’s no wonder the classic Challenger was chosen as the star vehicle in the original Vanishing Point, starring Barry Newman.
